    AASCB Board Member Training

The American Association of State Counseling Boards strives to create a vibrant community to enhance counseling regulation. As part of this mission, the Board of Directors has created a series of modules to help train new and experienced board members. These modules highlight the role of the licensing board, staff and chair roles, and ethics.

Developed with the Council on Licensure, Enforcement, and Regulation, these modules will aid in training and help boards work efficiently, understand their role, and serve effectively in the public interest.

AASCB strives to provide counseling boards with the education and training to promote public protection.

Member boards receive preferred pricing for the modules.  If you have any questions, contact AASCB at membershipinfo@aascb.org.

1:10- 2:25 pm Regulatory Governance in Practice: Roles, Responsibilities, and Real-World Challenges

    Speaker: Richard Yep, CAE, FASAE
    Ocean Vista Advisors
Former CEO of the American Counseling Association

    Description:

By the end of this 75-minute session, participants will be able to apply core principles of effective regulatory governance to strengthen board decision-making, role clarity, and the board–administrator partnership.

    Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

    1. Differentiate the regulatory role of a licensing board member from professional, clinical, or personal roles, using public protection, statutory authority, and impartial decision-making as guiding principles.

    2. Describe the distinct roles and decision-making responsibilities of the full board, board chair, individual board members, administrator, staff, committees, and legal counsel in the governance of a licensing board.

    3. Distinguish among statutes, regulations or rules, board policies, and administrative procedures, and identify the appropriate role of the board in each area.

    4. Apply effective board governance practices to meetings and deliberations, including agenda discipline, balanced participation, clear motions and direction, constructive management of disagreement, and appropriate communication between meetings.

    5. Analyze realistic governance scenarios and identify appropriate actions that support role clarity, public protection, effective board–administrator communication, and sound regulatory decision-making.

    2:25 – 2:35 Break

2:35-4:00 pm The Intersection of AI and Supervision

Designed for counseling board members, administrators, supervisors, counselor educators, and regulatory stakeholders, this session encourages thoughtful discussion about how the profession can responsibly integrate AI into supervision while maintaining accountability, competence, and client welfare.

Additional topics to be discussed include variation in state supervision regulations and the implications of multistate practice under the Counseling Compact.

    Speakers:
    Dr. Andrea Brooks, AASCB President
    Dr. Richard Strebeck, AASCB President-Elect
